Choosing a Destination: What Are You Actually Looking For?
One of the biggest questions when planning a trip isn’t necessarily where to go, it’s what you want out of the experience (AND COST. Check out my Budget Travel section for more info on saving big $$ and finding the best deals and rewards!)
I digressed, anyhow-- looking for a cultural deep dive? A big adventure? Sipping cocktails by the pool? Getting the insta perfect picture? No matter the goal, being honest about what you’re looking for makes choosing a destination much easier.
Additionally, when deciding where to go, thinking about how much ease versus challenge you want on your trip is an important factor. Some destinations offer seamless transportation, familiar food, and fewer language barriers, which can make the experience feel more relaxed and intuitive. Others require a bit more patience, navigating different customs, communication styles, or day-to-day logistics.
This balance is especially important for anyone beginning their international or solo travel journey. Starting with destinations that feel more manageable can help you build confidence and independence. I have seen first hand with newer travelers that pick a location, accommodation or excursion too far out of their comfort zone and it not only breaks their confidence but discourages them from future travel or experiences. This goes without saying, but this is what we DO NOT want.
With baby steps, it will be much more rewarding and comfortable to explore places that are less straightforward. That can means larger language barriers, unfamiliar food, different religious or cultural norms, less intuitive transportation or more limited resources.
Culture and religion also play a big role in how a destination feels. Social expectations, dress codes, and religious practices vary widely, and taking the time to understand and respect them can completely shape your experience. It’s not about avoiding difference, it’s about choosing places where you feel prepared, curious, and open to learning to eventually take on experiences that may feel more ambitious to you.
Think about traveling like a triathlon. You don't sign up for one with no experience or training - you'd injure yourself, like... permanently. You build endurance, comfort and expertise -- same with travel.
For me, destination choices look a little different now. I’ve had the incredible privilege of traveling to 29 countries, living in Spain, Thailand, and Italy, and taking many trips along the way. These days, I often let Google Flights lead the way. I’ll see what’s affordable or interesting and let that spark the idea. Sometimes... the destination chooses you (wink, wink).
Across all of my trips and itineraries, you’ll find a little mix of everything, culture, adventure, downtime, and spontaneity, all meant to give you inspiration for your own travel decisions! The goal isn’t to copy a trip exactly, but to help you plan something that reflects you, your interests, and what you want out of the experience!
