After almost thirty countries later - including long-haul flights, border crossings, and months living out of a suitcase or backpack, I’ve learned that what you carry matters just as much as where you go. These are the travel necessities I always pack (and mentioned a few on my Tips on Solo Travel)...ESPECIALLY for international trips.
Patagonia Ultralight Mini Hip Pack
I’ve had this Patagonia Ultralight Mini Hip Pack for almost five years now and it’s come with me everywhere. Passport, documents, cards, phone, you name it -- it all lives in there when I’m traveling.
Passport + printed copies + electronic copies
Always have backups — and spread them out between different bags. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve needed to show my passport only to realize it was still sitting in my hotel room… and every single time I was saved by a printed or digital copy.
Visa documents
A lot of countries now use e-visas that need to be completed within a few days of entry. Always check the entry requirements before you fly — some countries require a minimum visa validity or a certain number of blank passport pages.
Travel insurance details
Have them saved offline and know where to find them. You don’t want to be searching your inbox in a stressful moment.
Two debit cards + one credit card
Cards get blocked. ATMs eat cards. It happens. Having backups in different places is non-negotiable.
Let your bank know you’re traveling
Always notify your credit card company (and bank) before international trips. It takes two minutes and can save you from the nightmare of a declined card when you’re standing in line, jet-lagged, trying to pay for something basic.
Cash
Often it’s cheaper to withdraw money from a local ATM than to exchange cash ahead of time. Be mindful of foreign transaction and withdrawal fees.
Small amount of local cash
Always carry a decent amount of cash. Taxis, tips, small shops, or card machines that suddenly “don’t work” ...you never know when you’ll need it. Trust me.
Osprey Atmos AG 65
You definitely don’t need this exact pack... what matters most is finding something that works for YOU, your travel style, and the way you move through trips. For me, this Osprey just happened to hit that sweet spot.
It was actually one of my favorite gifts, and it’s been with me on everything from long weekend trips to a five-week stretch across Europe.
I can use it as a carry-on to supplement longer trips, and once I’m settled somewhere, it doubles perfectly for shorter trips and day adventures/ hiking trips making it incredibly practical when you’re moving around a lot.
Cotopaxi Fuego Down Hooded Jacket
This is hands down my number one travel item. It works in cold weather, warmer climates, and everything in between, packs down easily, and somehow manages to be both functional and really cute.
I’ve had this jacket for almost five years now, and it’s come with me everywhere. From Rwanda to Thailand, countless flights, long travel days, and freezing airplanes, it has never let me down.
It’s perfect for travel days because it keeps you warm without ever feeling heavy or bulky. I can throw it on for a long flight, stuff it into my bag when I don’t need it, and pull it back out when the AC is blasting or the temperature drops at night. It’s one of those pieces you don’t really think about — you just always reach for it.
If I had to pick one item I’d never travel without, it would be this jacket.
Chacos, The Ultimate Travel Shoe
If I had to pick one shoe for warm-weather travel, it would be my Chacos. Period. They are quite literally the perfect all-around travel shoe. Comfortable enough to walk around a city all day, sturdy enough for hikes, great for the beach, and the ideal as a shower shoe if you’re staying in hostels.
What really sets them apart is comfort. You can walk for hours and your feet just don’t hurt, which, when you’re traveling, is the holy grail.
I’ve had mine since 2017, so going on nine years now... and they’re only just starting to show some wear! Even better, you can replace the soles, which means they’ll probably be with me for many more trips to come.
If you’re looking for one shoe that can do almost everything, this is it.
